SHE DANCES ALL THE SOLO VARIATIONS NOW
Nelly, named after her grandmother whom she never knew, but who was like a pseudo-mother to her own mother and kept in memoriam as such, didn't make principal as the youngest dancer ever, she didn't make principal as the strongest technician ever, she didn't make principal as the most popular dancer ever, but she did make principal eventually anyway. At 29, three months before her 30th birthday, she was named the next principal of the National Ballet of Denmark after her final performance of La Sylphide and three months later, when she did turn 30, she threw a huge party for the rest of the company, combined birthday and promotion celebrations, and everything was supposed to be as it should, then. Everything was supposed to take its course.
Maybe it did.
At that party, also in attendance was Augusta Bjerre-Johannsen, the artistic director of the NBD, and it had just been revealed in the tabloids that morning that she was separating from her famous actor husband, Lauriz Johannsen, after years of trouble in what could seem like Paradise, the legendary ballet dancer and the international acting star.
Augusta was, the company whispered, mourning, this otherwise professional, ice queen exterior woman, and at some point during the night, when Augusta went out to have a smoke, Nelly followed. She just wanted to thank her for her promotion, nothing else, nothing more.
What happened was more than that.
After a brief, but intense conversation, Augustua proceeded to kiss her and the kiss evolved and since the party was held at a local luxury hotel, it was easy to book a room for the night, share the night and check out in the morning that inevitably followed. That was what they did, the newly minted principal dancer and her artistic director.
What happened after would be more drama than even Augusta's ex could manage, really.
Maybe it did.
